To drill or not to drill
How often do you use drilling in class? What benefits can you list? Watch to learn about the ELT pendulum and where drilling sits, before finding out about five drilling activities you can use effectively in the classroom from tomorrow.
In this vlog post for Pavilion ELT, Damien Herlihy turns his focus to the latest issue of the Modern English Teacher (Issue 32.2, March/April 2023). The theme is ‘young adults’.
In this episode, he looks at the article, To drill or not to drill? by Eric Nicaise. Damien starts by discussing the ELT pendulum and what drilling can bring to the classroom. He then moves on to look at five practical examples of drilling techniques that can be used in the classroom to great effect.
In other words, drilling can have a place in the language classroom and can be used effectively to improve your learners’ skills.
We would love to know what drilling techniques you have tried that your learners enjoy or the ones that have proved to be effective, as well as hearing how this post has made you reflect on your own teaching and/or which ideas you have found most useful. Do let us know in the comments under the vlog or below our shares on the Pavilion ELT social media.
